Reported by the Life News Agency Lu Lai, Austin

On January 28, three sixth-grade students and a teacher from Austin Jewish Academy visited Xiang Yun Temple to learn about Buddhist culture and history. They were warmly welcomed by temple volunteer Landry Scott Harmon, who introduced the concept of mindfulness in the Zen hall. He demonstrated meditation methods such as standing, walking, and sitting meditation, emphasizing the importance of awareness in the present moment.

The visitors then participated in Xiang Yun Temple’s weekly "Tea and Zen" session, where they tasted traditional Chinese black tea and made a vow to practice the "Three Acts of Goodness." Venerable Jueji led a reading of 365 Days for Travelers by Venerable Master Hsing Yun and explained the relationship between vegetarianism and Buddhist practice. The academy teacher also noted the similarities between Jewish and Buddhist teachings in their emphasis on compassion.

After lunch, Landry explained Buddhist symbols, ritual instruments, and historical aspects of Buddhism. The students, curious about the spread of Buddhist teachings, eagerly asked questions. During the visit, they turned the Dharma Wheel and received auspicious words from Venerable Master Hsing Yun. They also watched The Life of the Buddha animation, deepening their understanding of Buddha’s life and teachings.

At the end of their visit, the students copied the "Four Givings" teachings and crafted New Year lanterns, creating cherished memories. This visit to Xiang Yun Temple provided them with an immersive experience of Buddhist culture, leaving them with valuable insights and unforgettable moments.
