On September 28th, the resident monastics of Xiangyun Temple invited Venerable Miaoguang, the chief translator of Venerable Hsing Yun and Vice President of the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism, along with Venerable Zhiyue and Zhitong, to deliver two enriching bilingual lectures for the community.
The morning session, conducted in English, was titled "Moderation as the Foundation of Liberation" and drew 90 local attendees. Venerable Miaoguang explained the pitfalls of the five desires and how they can be countered by practicing the Five Precepts. She also shared how Venerable Hsing Yun and Abbot Xinbao apply Buddhist wisdom, respect, and compassion to all living beings.
In the afternoon, the Chinese lecture, attended by 70 members of Fo Guang Shan, focused on "The Joy Buddhism Brings Us." Venerable Zhiyue emphasized the importance of transforming one's mindset, while Venerable Zhitong discussed cultivating inner awareness through meditation. Both explored how to deeply understand the wisdom of Humanistic Buddhism through the teachings and actions of the Dharma Masters.
The lectures by the three Venerables were not only insightful but also filled with humor. Following the talks, they engaged in a discussion with the translation team, addressing challenges faced in their work. They recommended practicing mindfulness during morning and evening meditation, fostering a focused mind to enhance learning through listening. All attendees left with a deep sense of inspiration and gratitude, and greatly benefited from the experience!
